Algae Route

Be in close contact with nature, explore the tidal zone, learn how to value, observe and identify the edible seaweed on our coast with Joana Duarte, the founder of Algae Route. We'll taste and catch seaweed on the beach and learn how to use them in cooking in a simple, efficient and very tasty way.
The Algae Route it's a guided walking route along the seafront at low tide. During this route, all the edible macroalgae present in the area are identified, collected by the participants and tasted on the beach. After that, inside the hotel, there will be a gastronomic moment where participants will learn how to use seaweed in cooking, ending the event with lunch.
PROGRAM & Activities
9am: Meeting point at Ponta Ruiva or Castelejo beach
9:30am: Guided walking route (duration: 2 hours)
12pm: Gastronomic workshop and lunch (duration: 3 hours)
ACTIVITIES:
Beach walk: during a 2-hour guided walk, participants will learn how to identify and collect edible macroalgae. At the start of the walk, they will receive a special kit with a backpack, sunblock, a jar for storing seaweed, water, scissors and a behavioural field guide prepared by Joana Duarte.
Gastronomic moment: Introducing new flavours and new ways of cooking with seaweed.
Workshop: A workshop where participants will learn how to wash, dry and cook seaweed; learn about the nutritional properties of seaweed and its health benefits; a time for interaction between cooks and participants to prepare and cook lunch.
